Carl V

Carl V (Gent, 24th February 1500 – San Jerónimo de Yuste monastery, Extremadura, 21st September 1558) Spanish king from 1516, Holy Roman Emperor from 1519. He followed Maximilian I on the throne of the Emperor. He relocated the capital to Brussels. In 1556, he divided the Empire into two parts, the Spanish crown, with its formidable overseas dominions, Napoli and the German lowlands, was given to his son, Philip II, whereas the Holy Roman Empire was passed on to Ferdinand I. After resigning, Carl V died in 1558.
