Valvassore, Giovanni Andrea

Valvassore, Giovanni Andrea (1495 – 1572) carver, cartographer and publisher from Venice. He was born in Telgate, between Bergamo and Brescia, and started his career as an artist and carver. From 1530, member of the guild of painters, but he also appeared as a printer. In 1537, the imprint of his works mentions his brother’s name. Between 1544 and 1572, he only uses the name Giovanni Andrea. About half of his 81 works are undated, and thus, it is hard to determine when he was active. Most of his works have only survived in one copy. The sign of his workshop appears on several maps, including his version of the Tabula Hungariae.
